Hey, I'm Marcus

When my company transferred me to Riyadh back in 2022, I had zero clue what to expect. My wife Sarah was nervous, our kids (Emma, 8, and Jake, 5) were confused, and honestly? I was terrified.

Fast forward three years, and I can tell you this: Saudi Arabia is nothing like what Western media portrays. The family sections here? They're actually incredible. But figuring that out took us months of trial and error, awkward moments, and yes, a few expensive mistakes.

Quick Tips I Wish I Knew Earlier

  • Prayer times matter: Shops close during prayer (usually 20-30 min, five times daily). Plan around them or you'll be stuck waiting outside with cranky kids.
  • Thursday nights are packed: Weekend starts Thursday evening here. If you want peace, go Friday morning or Saturday.
  • Family sections = priority: You'll get better service, cleaner facilities, and often shorter queues. Always ask for family seating.
  • Cash isn't king: Cards work everywhere, but keep some riyals for small vendors and tips.
